There are six primary skills in the sport of volleyball. They are as follows:

Serving – Every play in volleyball starts with the serve. It is the only skill of the game which is completely in the control of the individual player. The serve may be executed either from a standing position or while jumping. The two primary types are float serves, which are hit with no spin so as to knuckle in the air, and top spin serves, which are struck so as to cause the ball to dip down toward the end of its flight.

Passing – Passing is the act of directing a ball coming from the other team in the form of either a serve or other non-attack form of play toward the net where it can be set. Quite often these passes are executed using the forearms (sometimes known as bumping), but they can also be done overhead (at least in the indoor game).

Setting – After a ball is passed (or dug) on the first contact, a second one is used to provide an attackable ball to a hitter. This set is usually executed overhand in the indoor game, though can also be accomplished using a forearm pass. You will see the latter – generally referred to as a bump set – in the beach game quite often where the restrictions on ball-handling are somewhat tighter.

Hitting – Also known as spiking, hitting is the process of attacking the ball into the opponents court. The objective is to score a point by causing the ball to land on the floor or to be played out of bounds by a defending player. This is generally accomplished by jumping and hitting the ball above the height of the net with a downward trajectory.

Blocking – The first line of defense against a hitter is the block. In blocking, a player (or players) attempt to prevent the ball from being played into their court by stopping it from crossing the net at the point of attack. This is executed by jumping very near the net and extending the arms above the head, and into the opponents side of the court for those with the height and/or jumping ability to do so.

Digging – Executed in a similar fashion to passing, digging is the handling of an attacked ball. It can be done either using a forearm pass or overhead, though generally speaking the ball is coming at a more rapid pace than in the case of normal passing. The idea, however, is the same in terms of playing the ball in the direction of the net to then be set.

If you aren’t familiar with the lake you can hop online and look for a map of the lake and it will show you all the different depths of the lake and you can check out the depths for the species you are looking to fish for.

Now that you have found a spot to fish, you can start drilling holes in the ice for your tip-ups, if you have some and a couple of holes to fish from while waiting on your tip-ups to go off. Remember to spread out the placement of your holes. If you put them close to each other you have the worries of them getting tangled when there is a fish on and some people say having them close together loses you chance of catching a fish as there are too much bait in one area.

You are ready to start fishing, some people say you ice fish like you are summer fishing, which isn’t true. You want to make sure you are going slow and steady as fish don’t expend as much energy during the winter months.If you are looking to give your fishing a jump start, you can always chum the hole before you start fishing. Sometimes chumming your hole can actually bring more fish to your area. You can use minnows or wax worms and let the fish go to town. Always have different types of bait with you, as you never know what the fish are looking to eat on that day. If you move your bait or jig too fast, a fish might let it go to save some energy. If you are going to be fishing for bluegills or perch, you want to fish the bottom as they love to feed off the bottom during the winter months.

Strategies for Effective Use of Volleyball Drills

Face it, volleyball drills can be a real drag, whether you are a coach or a player. The players continually drill, essentially doing the same thing everyday, while the coach watches them to see if they are working hard and doing what they are supposed to. In reality, volleyball drills are not fun, and can cause burnout rather quickly. There are many ways that you as a coach can make these inevitable occurrences a little more bearable, if not downright fun at times.

One way to relieve the boredom of volleyball drills is to make a competition of them. Throw in some friendly competition, and you will notice that your players seem to work just that little bit harder. Faster runners, harder hitters, higher jumpers, all of these can play into the overall game. A good way to promote this is to provide a grand prize that your team can shoot for. Perhaps find a way to have a weekend stay at a nice hotel at the end of the season. For every competition that a player wins, they can have their name put in a raffle. After the season, at the awards dinner, the winner is drawn from all entries. You could even have second, third ad so on winners. This gives a tangible goal for players to shoot for. To keep everyone interested, you might even have intermediate drawings for smaller prizes throughout the season. Before you know it, you will see your players working extra hard to improve in their volleyball drills.

Because your players know that they are going to be doing volleyball drills for every practice, it will be easy for them to burn out. Instead of letting them burn out, take a few days each season “off”. Rather than doing drills on a hot day, take the team to the community pool and let them just splash around and have some fun. There is no greater exercise than being in the water. Every movement is met with resistance from the water around you. This is actually a really good physical workout, disguised as a day of fun. In keeping with the sport itself, feel free to toss a ball in the pool with them to hit over the net. This can also serve a secondary purpose. Because of the resistance of the water, the players’ moves will be slowed down more than normal. Watch them and take note of little things that may need to be worked on. That will give you something to work on the next day, when you return to volleyball drills. After all, improving form and skill is the reason you practice your team in the first place.

A favorite way to make volleyball drills more enjoyable is to have the players teach them to younger players. It is a well-known fact that you can’t teach something if you don’t know it well. Teaching a set of drills to a younger player is a great way to see if your players understand exactly what the purposes of the drills are. Your players will find themselves looking at the volleyball drills from the same point of view as you are. You will shortly find that they are able to grasp the reasoning behind them much quicker when you start teaching them new and harder drills. If your players know why they are working on a particular set of drills, they will be able to understand the best way to get the most out of them. You may even find that your players begin to offer suggestions on how to make certain drills better for the team that you have missed.

In the end, the volleyball season will consist of a long stream of volleyball drills, repeated over and over. They will become second nature to your team. That doesn’t mean that they have to be boring and repetitive. Using just a little bit of creativity, you can make your volleyball drills more enjoyable and less work. Since they are more enjoyable, your team will have less reluctance to try their hardest. Before long, you will find every member of your team improving, and chances are, they won’t even realize it until their next game. When they win their next game, and see the ease with which they did it, you will find the biggest factor in making the incessant drilling more bearable: Your team’s sense of pride.

Snowboard Tricks – Impress Your Friends!

Snowboard tricks are basically maneuvers done on snowboards during competitions or for fun. Most of these tricks are performed on handrails, ledges, jumps or other obstacles. Some tricks can even be executed on the surface of the snow. There are many tricks when snowboarding that you might want to learn and know about.

Grabs. There are a number of grab tricks that originated from other board sports. Three of the most common grabs include the chicken salad, where the leading hand passes through the legs from the front and holds the back edge of the board between the feet; the crail, where the rear hand holds the board’s nose; and the one-two, where the rider’s front hand holds the edge behind his back foot. In addition to these, there are many other types of grabs.

Tweaks. There is a wide variety of tweak tricks which are sophisticated tricks requiring considerable technical ability. There are one-footed tweaks, which refer to tricks performed with the rear foot removed from the board; shifty, where the snowboarder twists his body to rotate the board 90 degrees then returns it to the original position before landing; and tuck knee, where the rider touches the top of the board with the left or right knee.

Straight airs. Straight airs snowboard tricks are defined by how the tail and nose of the board are moved. Some examples are the Ollie, where the snowboarder jumps into the air from the tail of the snowboard; the fakie Ollie, where the snowboarder jumps into the air while riding the board backward; the Nollie, where the snowboarder jumps into the air from the nose of the board; and the flail, where the snowboarder wildly swings his/her hands while still in the air.

Inverted hand plants. The invert refers to doing handstands on the edge of a halfpipe; the handplant, where the rear hand is positioned on the lip of the wall through a 180 degrees frontside rotation; the layback trick, which is actually a non-inverted handplant with the front hand positioned during a slide while the rider is laying back; and the eggplant trick, where the front hand holds on to the wall through a 180 degree invert and makes a backside rotation. This is just a few of many handstand tricks, most named after events and board sports.

Snowboarding Is A Modern Sport

Imagine yourself carving an awesome curved swath across a slope of fresh snow as skeins of sparkling powdered ice explode around you, leaving iridescent clouds of sparking ice in your wake that slowly cascade to the ground. Snowboarding is just cool.

For enthusiasts of this winter sport, those last four words explain it all. Since its humble beginnings in the 1960s as a child’s toy, Snowboarding has exploded into the Olympic event and gnarly extreme sport we know today. Modern snowboarding can be traced directly to the 1965 invention of Sherman Poppen, a chemical engineer who built a new snow toy for his young daughter by fastening two skis together and attaching a rope to the front end to hold on to. His daughter loved it and all her friends wanted one too, so Poppen decided to license the idea to a manufacturer. His wife came up with a name for the new product, and in 1966 “The Snurfer” became a minor sensation, selling over a half million units.

The next major development was in 1972 when Dimitije Milovich, an east coast surfing enthusiast, founded the Winterstick Company and started building snowboards. Milovich had built his first snowboard in 1969 based on a surfboard design, and by 1974 had two “Snow Surfboard” patents and was selling snowboards out of his shop in Salt Lake City.

By end of the 1970s the new and innovative sport of Snowboarding was being led by two legendary men, Jake Burton Carpenter and Tom Sims, who helped bring the sport into the mainstream consciousness. Burton was an East Coaster who refined the idea of the Snurfer and was selling what he called “Burton Boards”, while Sims was a West Coast skateboard icon selling his own version of a wheel-less skateboard-like “skiboard”. Both men were driven to market their concepts and engaged in a sometimes-bitter rivalry that propelled snowboarding into a mass-market phenomenon.

Throughout the 1980s snowboarding grew exponentially, as new snowboard products hit the market and ever-innovative snowboarders invented new ways to ride them. At first the staid world of winter sports skiing didn’t know what to make of all these scruffy young people showing up on the slopes with their boards, and many slopes actually banned snowboarders. But by the end of the 1980s all that had changed as the sport continued to explode in popularity, and began drawing major corporate sponsorship for organized competitions. By 1998 Snowboarding debuted at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, and since has shown no signs of slowing down.

Tips For Putting Spin on a Bowling Ball

Throwing a hook ball or spinning the ball when bowling is all about trying to create right to left motion (if you’re right handed) as you throw the ball down the lane, in order to knock as many pins down as possible. The hook creates some room for error so that you don’t necessarily have to strike the head pin in the perfect spot to knock the pins down.

Determine Which Grip to Use Based on the Type of Bowling Ball

When you go to the bowling alley if you don’t have your own and have to use the house ball, you want to use what’s called a conventional grip. To do this, hold your hand to the side of the ball, your fingers need to be in the ball all the way up to the second knuckle. Spread your index finger out a bit because that will help the ball hook more. Support the ball with your other hand by placing your other hand on the side.

If you are using a Finger-tip ball, which is better for throwing hooks than the house ball, put your fingers in the holes only as far as the first knuckles — this is called the Fingertip grip. Make sure to spread your index finger out and support the ball with your other hand.

A reactive resin ball is best for throwing hooks. Use the aforementioned Fingertip Grip, cup your wrist a bit, spread out your index finger and support the ball with the other hand on the side of the ball and you’re ready to throw a hook.

Mastering Your Release

The hook happens at the release point and your goal is to try to get your hand to rotate counterclockwise at the point of release. Your body position plays a big role. You want to have your head right over the ball or slightly on the outside of the ball, and your elbow on the inside of the ball. Your hand should come from the back of the ball. The important point is to create somewhat of a shelf for the ball in the palm of your slightly cupped hand.

Rotate your hand about half a turn, and let your hand go from slightly cupped to un-cupped. Release the ball by collapsing your hand and elbow. This will create RPMs and side rotation — the rotation causes the ball to roll in a different direction than the ball is traveling.

Learning this basic move will allow you jump onto jibs and jump off of jumps with ease. In order to learn this I would recommend finding a nice area of grass and strapping into your snowboard. Once you can get a foot off of the ground a couple of times you will be ready to try it on the snow.

When you are learning how to jump onto rails and boxes you need to remember that balance is key. If you let your snowboard lean too much toward your heels or your toes you will slip off and fall. The key to hitting jibs is keeping the bottom of your board flat on whatever surface you are on and balancing it out. It takes a lot of practice to get it down so don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t get it right away.

Snowboarding Is A Sport For All

The sport of snowboarding has really taken off since the late 1990s, due to new athletes coming into the sport, and what they were able to do on the snowboard.
